The BMW 530 exhibits almost zero turbo lag, and throttle response is natural and immediate both off the line and in higher-speed passing maneuvers. The B46 produces just a smidge more power and less torque than the previous N20 turbo four (248 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque from 1450 rpm, an increase of 8 ponies and a drop of 2 lb-ft). Still, the new 5-series feels notably quicker, thanks to extensive use of aluminum—including in the trunklid, doors, and suspension parts—combined with other mass-reduction efforts that have yielded a claimed weight loss of 123 pounds for the 530i xDrive version that we drove. Given all that, we have no reason to doubt BMW’s claim that the 530i xDrive can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, if not more quickly.
More important is that the new 5 feels more predictable and easier to maneuver, thanks in part to the redesigned suspension largely made from aluminum, which helps reduce unsprung mass. Also helping matters was our example’s optional $2600 M Sport package with its upsized 19-inch wheels and tires and lowered ride height (along with blackout exterior trim, a sport steering wheel, an aero body kit, and aluminum interior trim). Our car also was equipped with BMW’s latest Integral Active Steering system ($1150), which combines a variable-ratio steering rack with speed-dependent electric assistance and rear-wheel steering. As we noted in our 540i first drive, IAS now has a more linear and natural feeling, a boon to handling predictability.
As the roads dried out, we became less shy with our corner-entry speeds and found lateral-grip levels to be tremendous. When the time came to slow, the strength and pedal feel of the optional M Sport brakes stood out as excellent. Meanwhile, the dynamic dampers provided a supple cushioning of harsh impacts.

gave its flagship lineup a refresh that includes redesigned front and rear fascia, updated headlights and taillights, a new three-spoke steering wheel, and the latest generation of the automaker’s COMAND infotainment system. Two new models, the S450 and S450 4Matic, join the lineup and are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6. A revised 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 with two different power outputs is also new, as are a host of advanced driver assist safety features, and three new upholstery choices: Silk Beige/Deep-Sea Blue, Magma Grey/Espresso Brown, and Mahogany/Silk Beige.
The new optional Energizing Comfort feature links the climate control system, fragrance system, heater, ventilation, and massage seat functions, console heating, ambient lighting, and music to create six different comfort programs. Each program runs for 10 minutes and displays visuals on the headunit with colorful graphics, backed by suitable music.
Another newly available comfort feature is the Curve function, which allows the car’s body to lean toward the inside of the turn by up to 2.65 degrees, reducing centrifugal forces felt by passengers. Standard for the S-Class are the two impressive-looking high-resolution display screens that each measure 12.3 inches diagonally and share a single glass cover. Available options include interior ambient lighting with 64 colors, Qi wireless smartphone charging, a Burmester High-End 3D Surround Sound 1520-watt audio system, and mbrace Concierge service that can make restaurant reservations and gather information for sporting events. When the Dodge Challenger originally debuted for the 1970 model year, it arrived after the Mustang and Camaro, but offered a great number of powertrain choices from the 145-hp, 225-cubic-inch “Slant Six” to the fearsome 426 Hemi, the “Elephant Motor.” The Challenger only lasted five model years, but in that short time, it became one of the most storied muscle car nameplates in the industry. So much so that certain meticulously restored examples have sold at auction for six-figure sums.
The Challenger then returned for a six-year run from 1978-1984, but this new Mitsubishi-based compact coupe only offered two four-cylinder engine choices. The Dodge Challenger finally returned in 2008 ready to make a lasting impression with a massive 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 before later offering a 5.7-liter V-8 and 3.5-liter V-6.

The base Tesla Model X comes equipped with a battery large enough to cover a claimed 270-mile driving range but Tesla allows buyers to expand its range by opting for the Extended Range package which boosts it to 295. A high-performance variant is also offered which comes with a 289-mile range and a claimed zero-to-60-mph time of 3.5 seconds. Not quick enough for you? For $20,000 more, Tesla will unlock the Model X’s Ludicrous Mode which lowers the acceleration time to an incredible 2.8 seconds. Handling is respectable but the Model X’s party piece is really the strong acceleration generated by its electric motors. Recharging is quick via one of Tesla’s Superchargers, which are located across the country. Charging at home via a 240V or 120V connection will be slower, but may be more convenient for owners, so Tesla offers in-home charging
A stark and nearly buttonless interior design is classic Tesla. A huge touchscreen infotainment system dominates the dashboard and faux leather wraps everything from the seats to the door panels. The Model X’s unique windshield/glass roof runs seamlessly from the base of the hood up over the front-seat passengers for a nearly uninterrupted view of what’s ahead and what’s above. Despite these whiz-bang features, the Model X’s cabin leaves us wanting, especially considering its price can easily break the six-figure barrier, with non-descript air vents, misaligned panels, and flat-backed seats that don’t offer enough adjustments.
Most buyers are looking more for tech features than luxury, though, and the Model X can be optioned with the feature that is possibly the most buzzworthy: Autopilot.

The RS3’s mechanicals and MQB platform are largely shared with the $65,875 Audi TT RS, including the thrilling, 400-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder. The kicker for shelling out roughly $11K more than for a 292-hp four-cylinder S3, the five is revised and now features an aluminum block (versus the previous version’s cast-iron piece) and both port and direct fuel injection. The upshot is that the engine is more powerful and 57 pounds lighter than before, removing critical weight from the car’s nose for a front-to-rear weight bias of 57.7/42.3 percent. Put your foot down and there’s a brief pause before the transversely oriented engine’s honking turbocharger spools up a maximum of 19.8 psi of boost, helping to deliver 354 lb-ft of torque at just 1700 rpm. The five-pot then yowls excitedly to its 7000-rpm fuel cutoff to churn out its full complement of 400 horsepower.
The standard seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission fortifies the RS3’s flexibility on the road, being both effortlessly smooth when cruising and happy to sharply rifle through the gears to keep the engine on boil when the car is driven aggressively. And its highly effective launch-control system makes the wee Audi a stoplight-racing champ: Simply toggle the transmission and the stability-control system to their Sport modes, floor both pedals until the engine is holding at about 3500 rpm, and release the brake to catapult off the line as quickly as some Porsche 911s. Audi doesn’t quote specific front-to-rear torque splits for the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, but the quickness with which it shuttles power fore and aft makes the RS3 eminently controllable at its handling limit.
Despite a 277-pound weight penalty, this sedan sacrifices almost nothing to the TT RS coupe in terms of raw performance: The RS3 is but 0.1 second slower to 60 mph (a blistering 3.5 seconds) and covers the quarter-mile with similarly disorienting verve (11.9 at 117 mph). The numbers also make it 0.3 and 0.4 second quicker (and 4 mph faster) than its primary rival—the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 sedan—and place it well ahead of a BMW M2.
