Everyone has seen “Gangnam Style’s” wacky dance moves, frolicking girls, and strange costumes—if you haven’t, you might be the last person on earth—but underneath the low-budget-seeming window dressing is a tongue-in-cheek poke at the poseurs who aspire to live the wealthy lifestyle of the Gangnam district of Seoul. Celebrating the “Gangnam lifestyle” in a decidedly un-classy video, Psy is like the fleet-footed, musical equivalent of Rodney Dangerfield’s new-money character in Caddyshack, set to an insanely catchy melody.Like Psy, Kia Forte is Korean, and it, too, focuses on richer horizons, although the car’s mission is more forthright. Kia quality and competitiveness have been improving steadily, and the 2014 Forte is yet another step forward. Visually, the streamlined, sleek body demands a double take and continues the winning streak of Kia’s design department, which is headed by newly installed Hyundai Motor Group president . The car’s long-ish wheelbase begets nice proportions and a roomy rear seat.

The EX is the topmost of two Forte trims. Besides bringing more standard equipment, it also includes a 2.0-liter, direct-injected four-cylinder engine with 173 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque. (Base LXs get a weaker 148-hp, 1.8-liter four with port fuel injection.) A six-speed automatic is standard here, but an option on the LX, where it supplants a six-speed manual. The zestier engine pulls well from low rpm and is mostly unobtrusive, however runs to redline return coarse noises. The transmission shifts smoothly, although the manual mode won’t challenge a dual-clutch gearbox for fun.

Kia continues to step up its game, and the Cadenza is yet more evidence that it deserves to be seriously considered by savvy shoppers. The only engine available is a 293-hp 3.3-liter V-6, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive. While the Cadenza may not be a rocket, it does accelerate to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Kia hasn’t made performance a priority for the Cadenza, but it’s still sufficient, and the upscale interior appointments make it a very comfortable car.

The Kia Cadenza plays a role in this mission, although unlike its more overtly luxurious sibling, it’s more of a toe in the water; an attempt to prepare us mentally for more-expensive Kias to come.

As such, everything about the Cadenza feels carefully crafted to impress while taming expectations. Its luxurious tidings and big footprint make it an enticing alternative to smaller—but similarly priced—sedans such as the Acura TL and Lexus ES350. The Cadenza technically replaces the milquetoast Amanti , but banish any memory you might have of that car, which Kia mercifully yanked from dealerships three years ago. Starting with styling that mixes elements from the latest Forte sedan, the Optima, and the K9, the Cadenza is much, much better. From some angles it looks derivative—a Volkswagen Passat-ified Suzuki Kizashi comes to mind—but overall, the impression is upscale and even slightly sporty. Even though it’s basically a bigger Optima underneath, the Cadenza looks like its own luxury animal. Like the Toyota Avalon and Camry, the two Kias share a platform, although the Cadenza’s front subframe is unique, as is its body structure aft of the rear seat. (The new subframe accommodates the V-6—the Optima lineup is four cylinder only.) Dimensional differences are relatively minor, with the Cadenza’s wheelbase spanning two more inches, overall length an additional 5.2 inches, width another 0.7 inch, and height another 0.8 inch.

Snazzy styling, a first-rate interior, and an agile chassis make the Optima more than just another bland family sedan. Base models get a 192-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but turbo models have a 274-hp 2.0-liter four; both engines pair to a six-speed automatic. A hybrid combines a 2.4-liter four with an electric motor for 199 hp. We’ve found the hybrid a bit fussy but its fuel economy is improved over the gas version. As good as the current model is, an improved Optima goes on sale in late 2015.

The new car is swoopier and perhaps a tad more futuristic-looking than the previous model, losing a little bit of its Germanic presence in the update. The larger rear lights look more Tokyo than Teutonic, while the widened signature “tiger nose” grille suggests some sort of cybernetic unibrow. The greenhouse has more of a fastback lilt, and the larger daylight opening suggests better outward visibility at the cost of the last car’s perfectly modern proportions.

Kia claims the new body structure is 150 percent stiffer than the outgoing model’s. It also says it has stiffened the wheels, engine mounts, and body panels. The effort goes toward both quelling NVH and improving handling. Given that we were impressed by the new Sonata’s dynamic improvements, we don’t doubt that Kia has put in time in this arena, as well. Undercarriage upgrades include additional bushings on the subframe mounts, suspension-mounting points moved farther outboard, and larger dual rear lower control arms. The wheelbase is up by 0.4 inch, to 110.4, while girth increases by one inch. Wheel sizes range from 16 to 18 inches.
