Having previously used the Explorer name as a trim level on the F-Series pickup, Ford spun the Explorer off as its own standalone model to replace the Bronco in 1991.
The first four generations of Explorer were based on a truck-style ladder frame, and though most have featured four doors and a wagon roofline, it also yielded the Explorer Sport (with two doors) and the Explorer Sport Trac (with four doors and a short pickup bed).
With the shift from SUV to crossover, the Explorer also downsized its engine choices from a V-6 and V-8 to smaller fours and sixes, compensating for the loss of displacement and cylinders with the addition of turbocharging.
The Latest Generation
Ford rolled out the current Explorer crossover in 2011, and gave it a face-lift for the 2016 model year. It can be had in five trim levels and with three engine options: a naturally aspirated V-6, a turbo four, and a turbo six. Although the earlier Explorer Sport sported a different body style, the name now applies to a more performance-oriented trim level with the most powerful engine and a sport-tuned suspension, sitting toward the top of the line below only the flagship Platinum model.
