Toyota Corolla 2020:
In the realm of compact cars, there are two juggernauts that can’t be ignored: the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Both wear nameplates that have been around for decades, consistently providing basic, cheerful, and reliable transportation for millions.
Now in its 12th iteration, Toyota’s Corolla gets a ground-up transformation. Last year, the 5-door hatchback arrived, riding on the company’s latest global vehicle architecture that increasingly underpins the majority of its cars and crossover SUVs. This year it’s the 4-door sedan’s turn.
Before we discuss the results of our evaluation of the Toyota Corolla, it is helpful to understand who bought the previous version of this compact car, and what they liked most and least about their vehicles.
In terms of gender, Corolla owners are evenly split between men and women. Overall, the segment leans male (55%). The average owner in the segment is 48 years old, compared to 49 for the Corolla. Among Corolla owners and owners of all compact cars, 40% identify as members of Generation Y or Z.
Corolla owners are not as affluent as people across the compact car segment. The average annual household income of a Corolla owner is $52,619, while owners of all compact cars earn $70,279 per household.
Reliability, low maintenance costs, and high fuel economy are important to Corolla owners. According to J.D. Power data, 74% strongly agree that a first consideration in choosing a new vehicle is reliability (compared to 65% across the segment). Furthermore, 74% strongly agree that they avoid vehicles they believe will have high maintenance costs (vs. 67%). Additionally, 87% agree that a first consideration in choosing a new vehicle is miles per gallon (vs. 77%).

About Honda Civic Hatchback:
For 2020, the Civic hatch offers a manual in two trims: the mid-range Sport, and now the top-flight Sport Touring. Both trims can also be had with a continuously variable transmission.
Minor changes adorn the model’s front and rear fascias. Notable alterations include the fog light housings (now featuring a body-color crossbar), blacked-out accents surrounding the headlights, and a modified grille crossbar. The overall look does not change. Out back, the faux vents undergo a similar treatment.
The chances of 2019 Civic hatch fans turning down a free 2020 model on the basis of style is exactly zero.
Anything else? There’s grey and black wheels available in new designs, plus different trim in the cabin. Soundproofing is reportedly boosted. In a bid to make the mid-range EX model more appealing, leather adorns the steering wheel and shift knob while drivers will discover they no longer need to use their arms and legs to push that seat around.
As for the Sport, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity come standard, with its 7-inch touchscreen display audio system undergoing a doubling of speakers (there’s now eight). Push-button ignition and remote start replaces the Abe Lincoln-era practice of starting one’s five-door hatch with the use of a key. Both Sport and Sport Touring buyers can manage their vehicle remotely via HomeLink.
Starting at $22,580 after destination for a base LX, the Civic hatch adds $200 to its starting price for 2020. No trim in the model line sees a significant price boost, thankfully, and the addition of a manual in the Sport Touring means three-pedal fans can pay $800 less for one ($28,980).
Car window tinting has several benefits no matter where you live in the country, but if there were ever a list of cities where vehicles could most benefit from professional window film installation. Not only does window tint keep cars cooler in the sweltering summers, but it also lowers energy costs and increases privacy and security.
How durable is window tint?
Window film is installed on the inside of the glass for maximum durability—there’s no risk of damage from road debris, scratching branches, or extreme weather. Additionally, quality window film comes with a hard scratch-resistant coating to protect from kids, pets, and other everyday use. However, that doesn’t mean window film is indestructible. You’ll still need to take care when loading and unloading objects with hard edges like boxes or sporting equipment. Fortunately, replacing window tint on a single window is generally inexpensive.
Reduce UV radiation
While the standard glass used in car windows can block some UV radiation, a car window tinting of good quality from a reputable manufacturer —if applied correctly—can help increase protection from ultraviolet radiation. It can also help preserve the interior of your car, including the upholstery, carpeting, and dashboard, which can fade over time by exposure to sunlight.
The amount of light that a window tint allows into the interior varies greatly, and affects how well you can see out. Every state has its own regulations and laws pertaining to the level of darkness it allows for automotive window tints. The volume of light that can pass through your window is referred to as variable light transmission, or VLT. Each state has different regulations concerning VLT percentage, so it’s a good idea to check local laws concerning what you’re allowed to do.
In addition to blocking UVA radiation, a window tint can provide a couple of safety and security benefits. In an accident, automotive window tint film can actually help hold shattered glass in place or reduce the amount of shattered glass. Darkened windows may also hide or obscure articles left in your car, which may deter a thief.

The 2019 Subaru STI gets slightly more powerful for 2019 thanks in part to a new air intake and performance exhaust system, which bumps engine output from 305 horsepower to 310. Likewise, the four-cylinder mill receives a retuned engine control unit (ECU) and stronger pistons. The manual transmission also has a shorter third gear that Subaru says improves acceleration. A new Series.Gray model joins the lineup, too, but only 250 will be produced. These limited editions sport a unique Cool Gray Khaki paint color as well as exclusive badging, folding exterior mirrors, black 19-inch wheels, and sliver brake calipers. Inside, the Series.Gray mixes black faux-suede and leather with red stitching. Its standard equipment includes an upgraded suspension, Recaro front seats, and keyless entry with push-button start. For those seeking the ultimate STI, there is the S209; we estimate it will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
Any WRX STI purchase is sizable. We would probably curtail our spending given the Subaru’s plebeian trappings. If you desire additional niceties, the pricier Limited model adds the Recaro bundle plus a power sunroof, navigation, a Harman/Kardon premium audio system, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited also gains the option to replace the STI’s giant rear wing with a less outrageous one. Stick with the base WRX and you still get front and rear limited-slip differentials, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and red seatbelts.

Mercedes Benz GLA:
Essentially a raised hatchback version of the CLA sedan, the GLA performed better in our tests than its sibling. It got 26 mpg overall from the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. But the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is unrefined, and power delivery is uneven. This makes the GLA feel lethargic at first, then power comes on abruptly. Handling is nimble, but the ride is stiff and the cabin is loud. Visibility, particularly to the rear, is poor, and headroom is snug. Available safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot warning. A front-wheel-drive version and a high-performance 375-hp GLA45 are available. The infotainment system is complicated and takes time to master but now features compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The Mercedes GLA is an OK luxury subcompact SUV. It’s one of the most fun to drive crossovers in the class, with eager corner-carving abilities and carlike maneuverability. However, the GLA has an unrefined transmission and hesitant throttle response.
The standard infotainment system works well and is easy to use, but that’s one of the few highlights of the interior. The back seat offers little space, and most rivals have a larger cargo hold. While many other Mercedes vehicles set the standard for elegance in their class, the GLA’s cabin quality is mediocre.
You should buy the GLA if you want a small crossover with engaging driving dynamics, and if you don’t often ferry around rear-seat passengers. A few better choices in the class take the GLA’s strengths and add in lots of other positives
